Member of the Month

Congratulations to Steve Evanoff, our member of the month for August! Steve, who is one of our senior members, has been coming to Village CARES since our inception in 2008 and proves that aging doesn’t have to lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Steve does training sessions at our gym with Amber twice a week, and his example has inspired other gym members to do the same. He also cycles and walks regularly in the Pigeon Lake area. Keep up the great work Steve!

Strength Training for Personal Development

Personal development encompasses physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual development. Weight training can benefit men and women of ALL AGES and contribute to all of these areas of personal development.

Physical - A well-planned weight training program can improve the following: muscle, tendon, ligament and bone strength; muscle size, tone and endurance; appearance, posture, flexibility, metabolism, joint stability, power, sports performance, lean body mass, physical fitness and health.

Mental - A successful weight training program requires knowledge about how your body functions, responds to exercise, and correct exercise techniques. It requires consistent self-discipline to follow your plan, and continual analysis of your progress.

Social - Weight training can be done alone, with a training partner, or a group. Positive social qualities can be developed through training with others - among them sharing, caring, encouraging, and helping. It can be an excellent activity for family members or friends because everyone can be together while performing their own training program at their own level. A bond often develops among those who do difficult activities together.

Emotional - Weight training can help a person release emotional stress and tension. It also provides an opportunity to release anger and frustration in a socially acceptable and healthy manner - intense physical activity that is not directed at another person. The physical improvements of weight training tend to be accompanied by an enhanced self-image and greater self-esteem.

Spiritual - The spirit refers to the soul or life force within each living human. It is one of the intangible and invisible things of life that cannot be accurately measure or adequately described, yet somehow you know the life force is there. Those who increase the strength of their body and mind also seem to become stronger in spirit!
